要翻過幾個山頭 

才能經過那個土地祠 

　

要經過幾個土地祠 

才能出現那條小溪 

　

要種幾棵松樹柏樹 

才能到達那片密林子 

　

要生出幾個黃板牙的村人 

才能看到那個村落 

　　 

要拿幾塊溪邊的石頭 

黏上土角 

才能變成房子 

　

是誰長大之後就是祖父 

幾條狗能出去打獵 

幾只獸從深夜的山中

扛回來 

　

幾隻雞構成一個 

小有規模的黎明 

幾隻鴨跟著竹籃子 

去浣衣 

　　 

是誰在鐘敲三下時 

成為女人，點起油燈 

浸豆子 

作豆腐 

洗蒸籠 

做年糕 

　

是誰用竹枝子 

撐開窗戶 

把山坡上的百合花 

迎進屋來 

（到底幾枝百合花） 

　

到底要翻過幾個山頭 

追到霧，追到秋天的柚子 

冬天的橘子 

　

追到那個精算師 

問他到底怎樣 

才算是故鄉

How many mountain tops must one cross

before they pass a local temple

　

How many temples must one pass

before they see a stream

　

How many pines and cypresses must one plant

before a dense forest can start to flourish

　

How many yellow-teethed men of the countryside

does it take to make a village 

　

How much of the gravel of the shore

and the clay

must one collect to build a house

　

Who will grow up to become a grandfather

with dogs to go hunting 

and bring home the beasts 

from the mountain at night

　

How many chickens does it take 

to create a miniature dawn

how many ducks will follow the bamboo basket

to wash clothes by the riverside 

　

Who, after the clock strikes three times

becomes a woman, burns an oil lamp

soaks the dried beans

makes the tofu

and cleans the steamer

for a new year’s cake

　

Who uses the bamboo sticks

to push open the windows 

and brings the lilies from the hillside

into the house 

(and how many lilies exactly)

　

How many mountain tops must one cross

before one can catch up to the mist

to the autumn’s pomelo and the winter’s orange 

　

and to the actuary

asking what precisely

makes a hometown
